A Tribute to a Pioneering Librarian

Winton's Katie Hart (1899 - 1984) founded a bookmobile for people of color in the Winton Triangle area. Her service as a librarian ranged from 1932 to her retirement in 1969. Thirty-one years of that service included her Hertford County Colored Public Library Bookmobile. Chowan Discovery has written a biography of Hart and is published online by the Library History Round Table's Black Librarians Project. The biography is a .pdf file that can be downloaded from the Writings page.
