Chowan Discovery's First NC Civil Rights Marker

New Ahoskie Baptist Church was in the forefront of local Civil Rights action in the 1960s. Reverend John L. Scott and others led rallies at the church, and pressed for change. The very first North Carolina Civil Rights Trails Marker was dedicated in August, 2021 due to the nomination prepared by New Ahoskie and Chowan Discovery. The unveiling was held during New Ahoskie's annual Homecoming weekend, and Reverend Scott, now pastor of St. John's Baptist Church in Harlem, spoke at the unveiling and was guest preacher the next day.

Chowan Discovery thanks the leadership of New Ahoskie for its partnership, along with marker providers - the North Carolina African American Heritage Commission and the William G. Pomeroy Foundation. This is Chowan Discovery's eighth historical marker.
